A small square outside Ikebukuro Station’s west exit that became famous through Ira Ishida’s novels and the 2000 television drama, which painted it as the turf of teenage gangs. In 2019 it was rebuilt as an outdoor theatre, with a ring-shaped canopy called the Global Ring and a giant screen that beams concerts from the neighbouring Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre to the benches.
It is a place to pause rather than a destination. Sit under the ring in the evening with a drink from the station and watch skaters, buskers and office workers drifting toward the bars of Nishi-Ikebukuro. Fans of the drama will recognise the fountain; everyone else gets a free light show.
Tips
- The Global Ring stage hosts free concerts and outdoor cinema most weekends, so check the schedule board at the entrance
- The fountain and ring light up after dark and the park turns into an open-air lounge until the last trains
- Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre next door has cheap classical concerts and an unusually good lobby café
