Koenji has more than twenty live houses within ten minutes of the station, most of them basements holding 50 to 300 people, and between them they cover every strand of Japanese underground music: punk and hardcore, which the neighborhood has hosted since the late 1970s, plus noise, psychedelic rock, folk, free jazz, idol shows and the occasional touring act who wants to play somewhere small. Koenji HIGH, wedged under the Chuo line tracks, is the biggest and easiest to find; the others hide behind unmarked doors.
Pick a night by the venue rather than the band, pay at the door, and stand close. Shows end early, around ten, when the alleys of standing bars north of the station take over with the same crowd.
Tips
- Koenji HIGH under the tracks, Show Boat, Penguin House and Muryoku Muzenji are the core rooms; check their schedules online a day ahead
- Expect 2,000–3,000 yen at the door plus a 600-yen drink ticket; cash only almost everywhere
- Earplugs are a good idea at the noise and hardcore nights; the bars outside stay open long after the last band
