Mori Art Museum

森美術館

A contemporary art museum on the 53rd floor of Mori Tower, higher than any other gallery in the world, with large thematic exhibitions that lean toward Asian artists, architecture and the politics of the present. Shows have ranged from a 2,000-piece Takashi Murakami retrospective to surveys of Southeast Asian collectives, and the scale of the rooms lets big installations breathe.

The museum keeps late hours and the view from the adjoining observation deck is half the point, so go in the evening when the city below turns to a circuit board of lights. Use the dedicated Museum Cone entrance at the base of the tower, where tickets are sold.

Tips
  • The ticket includes the Tokyo City View observation floor one level down, so time the visit to catch sunset and the city lights
  • Late opening until 22:00 makes it a good second half of an evening after dinner in the Hills
  • Exhibitions run for months and are shown in a single large run, so check what is on rather than expecting a permanent collection
