Odaiba Seaside Park

お台場海浜公園

An 800-metre crescent of sand on Tokyo Bay facing the Rainbow Bridge, with the skyscrapers of Shiodome and Tokyo Tower behind it. Nobody swims, but the beach fills with couples, families and photographers at sunset, when the bridge is lit white and the Yurikamome trains cross it like a toy. The stone forts that give Odaiba its name, cannon batteries built in 1853 to repel Commodore Perry, are visible offshore.

Come late afternoon, walk the promenade from Decks to the Fuji TV building, and watch the colours change. On summer weekends the beach hosts festivals and fireworks; in winter the air is clear and Mount Fuji sometimes appears above the western skyline.

Tips
  • Sunset lights the Rainbow Bridge from behind and the illuminations start as soon as it is dark, so arrive forty minutes before dusk
  • The replica Statue of Liberty near the Aqua City mall is the postcard foreground for the bridge
  • You can walk the bridge itself on a free elevated path from 9:00 to 21:00 for a view back toward the beach
